I think Rick (Greyfox) has one and is in LUV

Maybe he'll catch this and contribute orrrrr, if I'm mistaken, set me straight.

Yup, got one. Probably my mostest favorite midrange pd rifle. XP-100 action,
reworked cast off XR 100 stock, Criterion 1-10 twist barrel, shilen 2oz trigger, 6x24 Bushnell 4200 Elete scope with FCH-dot. Shoots mostly 32gr VMax & H4198 powder.

My bud John Beauchamp has two built on Savage actions. Helluvafine pd round. No recoil, cool burn, low noise, accurate. What's not to like?

I have a Cooper M38 in 20 vartarg. I have good luck with Tac, H4198 and H335. I have settled on the 32 gr Vamx and H335. Just an FYI, I had good luck with the 35 gr Berger also. A great little round.

Howdy,

I have one.. love it! You will find that at 200 yds the 32gr and the 40 gr break even in ballistics , with the 40 gr giving the advantage further out. Plus the 40 grs buck the wind better. I have a 1 in 11 twist. Heard that the 1 in 12 might not stabilize the Hornady 40 grs so I went with the 11 just to be safe, so no problems with mine. Sure makes a loud POP when they hit :D
Switched to H 322 as I found that the 335 was more temperature sensitive. 322gave me a more constant load in the temperature swings from hot to cold or visa versa.

Just a personal preference there!

I do not own a 20Vartaeg. But I got to shoot one of Heck's when I went PDing with him a few years ago. It was like a laser. Very little hold over and I felt like I couldnt miss. Shot better with it that any of my own 7 or 8 rifles I took. It was on a whole nother level than I am used to. :D

20 vt

I have two.
One is a Sako A1 sporter, Mcmillan stock, and Shilen barrel.
I use it for calling coyotes and have shot a few PDs with it.
The second is a Rem XR 100 that was a factory 223. Has the barrel replaced with a heavy shilen in 20 cal. Factory thumbhole stock remains. Had to install a sako extractor to get the emptied to eject.
It is extremely accurate and gets PD use.

Great cartridge in my view.

20 Vartarg

I have a 20 VarTarg that I built on the little Sako Vixen action. It's a repeater and the VarTarg feeds flawlessly through it. The barrel is a Krieger, 22 inch, 11 twist, .230"neck, with a .020" Freebore for the 40gr. bullets. I originally made my brass from Lake City '09 brass some 10 years ago and I estimate the 200 rounds I originally made have been reloaded about 8 times (with a pretty warm load). I'm amazed at the longevity of both the brass and the barrel. And accuracy has not fallen off! Still routine .200" groups or better, at a hundred yards. Hits at 400 yards are amazingly consistent and you can spot your own shots. I tried the 32gr bullets but they did not impress me. I have a model 7 action that I will be using on a new VarTarg rifle and I can't wait to see how it will compare. I use AA 2200 powder.

20VT = Squirrel Nightmare

Choper, I'm shooting squirrels with my Cooper 20VT, and after four rat seasons, will admit it has become my all-time favorite rat rifle. My other rifles just don't get shot as much any more. The rats hate it! ;)

Mine will shoot virtually any of the 32gr poly-tipped bullets well, but prefers the 32gr SBK and RL-7.

In the field last week having my way with Skippy:

Probably more accuracy than is required to smack a squirrel past 350, but it's nice to have the ability to head shoot the little buggers when they're peeking over their mound at that range.

Good luck with your build.....I know it will become your favorite rat rifle for those N. Calif. alfalfa munchers. :D

Mine is in the planning stages with a barrel on order Krieger 11 twist and a new reamer for Lapua brass. Seems there are things to be considered with this new Lapua offering. I will turn brass, but wanted a reamer to satisfy both turners and non turners and made the decision for a .2335" neck diameter. I found 6 pounds H4198, have an 8 pounder of H322, a pound or 2 of TAC, no RL7 to be found!! I have 600 32 grain Sierra Blitzkings to get me started!! A new .378" PTG bolt on order for an action thats been thru Greg Tannels blueprint services. I went to K&M site and ordered a carbide mandrel non cutting, and expander in .204" Still need a Redding S-Type FL die. I found out a few things, Powder Vally has raised their shipping, and Sinclair, and Grafs have lowered theirs.

20vt

Tim, your upcoming 20VT rifle should be a real tack-driver by the sound of what you're putting into it.

Here's another powder suggestion that has worked very well in every rifle I have using the Furball case (221FB, 20VT & 17 Mach IV).....Accurate 2200.

On the Western Powder burn rate chart, it's got an identical burn rate as RL-7, but I've found that it may be just a tad slower, as my Cooper 20VT thrives on 18.5gr of RL-7, but to get the same velocity with a 32gr SBK, 20.0grs is required using A2200. Accuracy is excellent.

Good luck with that build and be sure to post pics and results when she's done. :)

Rick, it won`t be nearly as pretty as the Cooper you have, thats a gorgeous rifle. I saw some 1 pounders of AA2200 last trip to the allaboutfun store. I`ll snag some if its still there. Thanks for sharing the information, its always helpful when starting out with a new cartridge.

Talked to a friend last night I`m doing some chambering for and asked him to keep an eye out for some RL7, got a call today, they had 1 pound at our local BPS, it was 34.99 but was worth it to me. My old hangout has 13 pounds of AA2200, gonna slide by there and get 2 of those!
